Please note there’s an almost identical version of this teaching activity for Scratch Junior instead of Scratch for those schools who have the app on iPads or Chromebooks. In my opinion Scratch Junior is slightly easier than this version.
In this activity pupils create an algorithm to explain how their animation works before programming using Scratch 3.0 to make the animation. This activity is based on identifying parts of a flowering plant but could easily be adapted to other topics.

This activity uses the free Hopscotch app on iPads. Please note there is an almost identcal lesson to this that uses the free Tickle app. It is possible for children to do both lessons and they can compare how inputs and outputs are used in different programs.
In this lesson children get the opportunity to create their own programs in the Hopscotch app
using the input and output devices that are part of the iPad. They learn about different commands
and which input and output devices they control. Children spend tme experimentng with different combinatons
of inputs and outputs before turning algorithms into programs featuring inputs and outputs.
The descripton for this objectve states that children should learn how to cut, copy and paste in order to refne and
reorder content within applicatons. In this actvity children learn to copy and paste then how to cut and paste.
They have to use cut and paste to sequence some text and use copy and paste to add text to a document to create
a newspaper report. This actvity has an Ancient Egyptan theme but it can be adapted.
Duration: Two hours.
In this activity children learn about 2D plans and how they are used in a variety of jobs. They then
use an online room planning tool to experiment with 2D room design. In a second session they use software to create a 2D plan of an historical place or a setting in a text.
In this activity children create their own video review of a short film in the style of a YouTube video. They should have already watched a film and written a review. They use screenshots, music and video recordings to create their own review. There is also an option to create an opening title graphic using the keynote app and to add a green screen background behind their scenes to the camera.

A.L.E.X. is a fun puzzle game and a great way to train your brain. A.L.E.X. helps you think and plan logically as you program your robot A.L.E.X. with a sequence of commands to get through each level from start to finish.
This app is best used by teachers rather than pupils. It lets you record audio and uploads it to audioboo.fm where it can be embedded in blogs. Great for capturing short recordings of pupils explaining, reading out work or performances. Use the iPhone version on an iPad as the iPad version only lets you listen to uploaded content.

Essentially, 'Cato’s Hike' is a universal game for the iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch to teach kids and young children basic programming skills. The younger ones will obviously enjoy solving levels using simpler coding techniques but the hope is the older ones will pick up more advanced concepts like loops and branching as well as even more advanced concepts like a basic stack or memory!
