Breakout Sessions

Session 1 Breakouts

Beyond Scratch - Aspiring game designers - Burley Oaks Primary School and Steve Dale

Scratch is a great tool to teach programming but sometimes pupils may feel the need to try something a bit more testing! In the Bradford computing scheme we advocate the use of games design to enthuse young people in the art of programming – but what happens when you want to go further?

We have been using Construct 2- an industry standard 2D games programming tool with 2 primary schools and we would like to share our experiences with you.

Pobble.com - Simon Blower

Pobble.com is an exciting way of using technology to making writing truly inspirational for children.
Created by teachers and school leaders, Pobble was originally intended as a simple on-line bank of children’s writing to give other professionals in education from around the world ideas for their practice. However, what developed was a large worldwide community of enthusiastic people all passionate about children’s writing. This innovative website is now taking the education world by storm! Many schools are now using this wonderful tool as a spectacular way to raise writing standards and enjoyment, as well as dynamically engaging proud parents, carers and the wider school community.
This workshop will share with you a range of brilliant free resources and ideas which teachers can use and access immediately to impact on writing in schools. They will also share how Pobble publishes, shares and celebrates children’s writing with the world on a safe and secure platform. As well as being absolutely inspirational to young writers, one of the reasons why Pobble has taken off in so many schools is that it has been created with the busy teacher in mind! It takes a matter of seconds to submit work to the site; Pobble does all of the rest! Pupils adore the site and monitoring the numbers of views and comments on their writing, as well as finding out which countries their readers are from!

For the Students, By the Students - Digital Leadership - Myrtle Park Primary School

How introducing the digital leadership program to school has impacted on the whole school learning and use of ICT and computing equipment and the personal effect it has had on the students involved.

Coderdojo - Shi and Kriss Blank

CoderDojo is an open source, volunteer led movement orientated around running free not-for-profit coding clubs and regular sessions for young people. At Dojos, young people between 5 and 17 learn how to code, develop websites, apps, programs, games and more. Dojos are set up, run by and taught at by volunteers. In addition to learning to code, members meet like minded people, show off what they’ve been working on and so on. CoderDojo makes development and learning to code a fun, sociable experience. The Bradford CoderDojo meets once a month on a Saturday morning at the Innovation Centre. This session will showcase some of the activities we run at the Dojo and how you can get involved as a volunteer or by bringing your own children.

Session 2 Breakouts

Sherkey Flatts and the mystery of the disappearing iPad - Anna Cole from SS Peter and Paul Primary School and Paul Scott

Last year we launched an interactive multimedia detective adventure based on our detective hero 'Sherkey Flatts' and his challenge of solving 'the mystery of the disappearing iPad.' This was a web based interactive adventure aimed at Y5 and Y6 children who accessed 'clues' from a variety of digital media and using a lot of inference and deduction solved the mystery. This session will outline the activities the children undertook and Anna Cole, Deputy Headteacher at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Primary school in Yeadon, will discuss how this impacted on attainment and engagement with her children. We will also be outlining the next adventure starting in the Summer term 2016 called Sherkey Flatts and the mystery of the re-appearing pictures.

Read, analyse, annotate, publish - Bowling Park Primary School and Tim Bleazard

How can we allow all pupils to capture their thoughts, opinions, suggestions then share them with others? The staff and pupils at Bowling Park Primary School will explain how they used apps to analyse writing, record their opinions and suggest improvements before saving them in a format that allowed them to be printed and shared in pupil books. The school has used digital leaders to pioneer this approach and will explain how techniques have been shared across class over two sites. Although this technique focussed on improving writing it can be used for other subjects. The apps used are available for iPads as well as Android tablets and Windows devices.

3rd Millennium Learning Awards - Carl Faulkner and Normanby Primary School

Staff and Governors at Normanby Primary School have created an environment where the sharing of innovation and expertise are building a community of practice that is vibrant and successful.

Normanby Primary is a large Primary School in the North East of England.  They achieved the 3rd Millennium Learning Award in 2013, almost by accident and despite their best endeavours to focus on teaching and not technology.  This presentation will illustrate how the school has created an environment for learning, for pupils and staff that makes full use of the opportunities presented by technology.

Using Technology to Enhance the S in STEM - Karen Brunyee

Time lapse photography, overnight recording of data, Wi-Fi microscopes and movie making! All these tools are available to support your class whilst Working Scientifically. In this session you will explore available technology such as dataloggers, digital portable microscopes and iPad apps to support your class record, collect, analyse and report their scientific findings.

Session 3 Breakouts

Video killed the radio star -  James Langley

Many primary schools use audio and video across the curriculum with their pupils to engage and enhance their learning. There are many schools who have spent a lot of money on filming solutions that may not have been used as effectively as they could be. In this breakout James and Hawksworth Wood Primary School will demonstrate how video can be scripted, created, edited and published on a shoestring budget. They will be using iPads to demonstrate a number of apps and other software and online resources that allow simple ‘workflow’ to create a polished finished video product. Apps will include iMovie, Green Screen by Do Ink, RecoLive MultiCam, Tellagami, Dropbox and Vimeo.

Lads and Dads iRead project - St Francis Catholic Primary and Paul Scott

In January 2016 St Francis Primary School will be piloting a project to improve oracy and reading with Year 1 and 2 children through the use of iPads. The project is aimed specifically at encouraging Dads to spend more time with their sons sharing books and reading together. Each parent will be provided with an IPad mini preloaded with a range of interactive texts, exemplar reading videos and a 90 minute training session on how to use the device effectively with their children. This session will be presented with staff from the school discussing the practicalities of delivering the project and the impact on the pupils attainment and attitudes to reading. We will also model some of the activities undertaken by the parents.

Apps to support writing - Martin Bailey

A hands-on workshop exploring the best apps for supporting pupils' writing at both KS1 and KS2. Bring your curriculum to life with a range of exciting apps for both fictional and non-fiction writing. Apps showcased make full use of current tablet technology and inspire pupils to create high quality writing in all areas of the curriculum. Simple, yet wonderfully effective ideas that you can immediately take back and implement in school.

Creative use of tablets in the classroom - Hannah Davies

This session will encompass how to use tablets creatively in the classroom drawing upon examples from key schools around the country. We’ll be discussing how best to use the technology to engage and enthuse learners.
