Digital Leaders are pupils trained to be experts and advocates of using appropriate technologies in schools allowing them to act as ambassadors and peer mentors for staff, students and parents. There are hundreds of schools with thousands of Digital Leaders across the UK and feedback from pupils and staff at the schools is overwhelmingly positive. This has resulted in a range of connected technologies and pedagogies used effectively to raise self-esteem, improve attainment, independent learning and engagement across the curriculum. Many Digital Leaders support the management of a range of technologies across the school reducing the workload of teachers and the Computing subject leader.
We have delivered Digital Leader programmes in over a 100 schools in recent years. The provision is designed to enable students to be experts and advocates of using appropriate technologies in schools, allowing them to act as ambassadors and peer mentors for staff and other students.
This year we will be delivering the very successful Digital Leader Academy and Digital Leader Academy Plus aimed at existing Digital Leaders called (details here).
Our Digital Leader Academy Programme enables children to:
• Describe and model the safe and responsible use of a range of technologies.
• Demonstrate appropriate knowledge and understanding of specific technologies relevant to each school context.
• Exhibit good communication skills and collaborate effectively with staff and students.
• Understand the concept of ‘Student Voice’ and become a conduit for this across the school with reference to the use of innovative digital and mobile technology.
The academy runs 2 cohorts over the year where a member of staff and 6 children attend 2 half day training sessions, a celebration event and receive a school visit. Included is full support for staff and children for a year through the online Edmodo platform and the award of Digital Leader virtual badges and certificates for achievements completed by the pupils.
Session 1 Understand the role of a Digital Leader as an ambassador, communicator and technologist. Investigate new technologies and some key areas of (e)Safeguarding. Record your successes as a Digital Leader using Edmodo.
In-school visit A chance to see Digital Leaders in situ to discuss and record progress since the initial meeting and publish this on our Digital Leader blog.
Session 2 Feedback from each school on their Digital Leader successes so far. Explore 3D printing and create a personalised 3D printed Digital Leader badge. Investigate password security and revisit the online badges and Edmodo.
Celebration event Children share group and individual successes within their schools and become accredited Digital Leaders.
All training is delivered at the Innovation Centre and the cost of the programme is £450 (£360 for subscribing schools) for all the above training for a maximum of 6 pupils.
