Do you want to improve your children’s reasoning and explanation skills? Do you want them to deeply understand mathematical rules and relationships? Do you want to improve outcomes from the Reasoning papers in the SATs?
This course, delivered over 2 sessions and aimed at Primary Mathematics Subject Leaders, will:
Session 1 will involve you learning how to encourage children to notice rules and relationships, focusing on using concrete resources and pictorial representations. We will look at word banks and sentence stems that can be used to scaffold explanations and discussions. You will also be skilled in the technological aspects that will be required in order to record and present findings.
Session 2 will involve children. You will bring two children from Key Stage 2 who can act as ambassadors back in class for the process and the technology. We will take part in an investigation together and the children will record their findings and conclusions. Then you will be given time, with support if required, to pursue another investigation of your choice with your children, drawing on the information you will have gathered from the first session.
The 2 sessions will be during afternoons a week apart and will be from 1:30pm until 3:30pm (pleased arrive 10 minutes before the time stated, if possible, to allow for a prompt start at 1:30pm). The 2 afternoons are: Monday 19 November and Monday 26 November. They will be hosted at the Curriculum Innovation Centre. For location details please go to http://ticbradford.com/aboutus/find-us
The cost for both sessions will be £150. The sessions will be jointly delivered by Tim Bleazard of the Curriculum Innovation Service and Sharon Day of Sharon Day Maths Ltd.
